Cyber threats aren't only a problem for large corporations. Smaller businesses are often targeted precisely because attackers expect weaker defences. The good news is that a handful of basic measures block most common attacks.
The checklist
- Use strong, unique passwords and a password manager so staff aren't reusing the same password everywhere.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication for email, banking and any cloud systems.
- Keep software updated. Operating systems, browsers and applications should install security updates promptly.
- Back up your data regularly, keep at least one copy offline, and test that you can actually restore it.
- Train your team to spot phishing. Most attacks start with a convincing email or message asking someone to click a link or share a code.
- Limit access. Staff should only have access to the systems and data they need for their role.
- Secure your network. Change default router passwords, separate guest Wi-Fi from business systems, and use a VPN for remote access.
- Protect your devices with up-to-date antivirus and screen locks, especially laptops and phones that leave the office.
Know where you stand
A checklist is a good start, but every business has its own risks. A cybersecurity assessment reviews your systems, finds the gaps, and gives you a clear plan to close them.
